The first use of silver for jewelry/gifts is unknown. Ambassadors from Crete were bringing silver vases as gifts to the pharaohs of Egypt as early as 3100BC. The tradition of silver anniversary dates back to the Germeric Region of Middle Europe. Then it was customary for a husband to give his wife a silver garland, silver represented harmony, when they celebrated 25 years of marriage.
What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of an alloy metal, normally copper, zinc or nickel. Without these added metals silver would be too soft to wear.
What causes tarnish?
Air reacting with the slightest impurities is the biggest offender. Believe it or not wood’s acid , especally oaks, causes silver to tarnish. Many other things can contribute as well such as lotions, perfumes, and oil from our bodies.
How do I keep my silver tarnish free?
The best way is to wear or use it often. However at some point most silver will tarnish. The best way to slow down the process is to keep it in separtes containers (like zip lock bags) and store it in a cool dry place. A piece of chalk in your jewelry box will also help. The chalk draws in the moisture from the air keeping your jewelry box drier. If your jewelry does tarnish a treated polishing cloth, silver liquid cleaner or silver polish and a little elbow grease will restore your piece to looking like new.
Why should I choose silver over gold?
For one silver flatters all skin types. As the most reflective white metal silver out shines gold. It’s affordable. Even at it’s highest silver still beats gold in price.
